Works in Progress

Although I've been focusing more on my career as a journalist lately, that doesn't mean I've completely given up on my dream of writing fiction. Here is a list of some of just some of the projects I have in the works.

You can find my weekly column at the Reporter & Farmer's website here.

Why It Matters: The Tale of James R. McHuggett

  • This is the story of a man named James "Jim" Robert McHuggett. But he died, so it doesn't matter. He'd always thought he lived a boring life. Except, it really was far more interesting than he could ever have imagined. Then again, not many really took an interest until after his untimely death.

Light Within the Darkness

  • Alex Jean and Katie Lynn Cooper are teenage twin girls with extraordinary gifts that are total opposite of each other yet those magical powers mirror one another also. They find themselves at the center of a battle that threatens to drive between them and break their sisterly bond. The pair must learn to seek the light, each in their own way, in order to survive.

Fairy Sun

This fun story was my NaNoWriMo 2013 project. I have a ton of notes about it but trying to narrow down the story to have more meaning has proven more laborious than I first imagined. Let's just say I'm a stickler when it comes to tying up loose ends.

  • With eighth grade graduation finally out of the way, Sara Adams' biggest concern is waiting out the last four years of school before she can move on with her life, haunted by her father's unstable mental condition. But when being literally sucked into day dreams about fairies begins causing Sara to space out in the real world, she starts to question her own level of sanity. No longer able to separate the two worlds as real and imagined, a mysterious black cloud begins to take over the Fay Kingdom at the same time her father's illness takes a turn for the worse. It's up to Sara to determine the link between the two worlds and save him and stop the nightmares from breaking through.

Silent Destruction

I have finished the first draft of Silent Destruction, an epic tale that was created on a whim one weekend when my sister and I were brainstorming some fun story ideas. Although I had worked on it a little before, the bulk of this story was written for JuNoWriMo 2012. I finished the first draft in the following months. Since finishing I have found some plot holes and am still working those out in my head. The rough cuts received positive feedback from a local writer's group.

  • When Fate brings together a rebellious young centaur, a mute girl with newly discovered magical abilities, and a comical talking goat, they must first figure out how to work together if they are to have any hope of thwarting an unnamed evil from razing the land. All the while, each is running from a secret destiny, past, and life that none of them want but which together may be the key to defeating the evil.

Spell Bound

Zombie magicians and dragons? What could possibly go wrong? Spell Bound was my 2012 NaNoWriMo project (title subject to change). The idea for this story first came to me as a junior in high school and I wrote a rough draft in under a week. Since then, the characters and story premises has grown and deepened. At this point, I've gotten up to a fourth draft and I can feel it changing still.
Within our world are magical points that transport select individuals to realms where supernatural forces govern all. Within each realm is a magician-king who dispatches trained magician guards into the world to recruit undiscovered magicians into their ranks. Most of those brought back never realized they were magicians and find adjusting to their new world difficult with the trace amount of magic they have.

But sometimes, a magician is brought back who is more powerful than most. Sometimes that power goes to their head when they are trained to use use that force. And sometimes they decide to overthrow the magical government in a bloody display just because they can.

When one man sends the otherwise peaceful realm of Lisbond into chaos, Seaira is forced to overcome her own insecurities about her magic in order to survive. And possibly she is the only one capable of stopping the crazed raise to power of the man she loves.
